A Brief History of Doctor Who Regenerated (PART THREE)

So I'm gonna quickly draw this history to a close so that we can finally look towards the future and not at the past and we can start updating this website with latest news about the Regenerated project.

As scripts started flooding in from a number of people and people even began writing first drafts for episodes in the second series will quickly realised that we needed to relocate and reassess our project.

We made a now defunct Doctor Who: Animated Series forum where members could freely discuss their episodes and plans. Gradually some writers drifted away and the project became quite scattered so Barney and I decided to write the entire series from scratch together, using what all the writers had done so far as a template (that sounds like our guest writers don't have an input, but they did. Most of what they write is in the series, just everything they didn't... we had to).

We then went searching for a voice cast. We cast Chris Fassnidge and Madeleine Vaughan as the Doctor and Companion (more about them in a future post) and we are still gathering together as many people as possible. (We will make a new forum for people that want to be a voice actor).

We are currently working our way through animation VERY SLOWLY. (Please guys, don't ask when this will be made. The first episode could be out by the end of the year, it could be in four years, we don't know what will come up...)

Just so you can see, this is how our Doctor and Companion have evolved over time.

A Brief History of Doctor Who Regenerated (PART TWO)

So now we had a team of people helping us. We started to think that our plan could actually work as we started getting scripts in from everyone. Our series began to form.

Many episodes changed about and got swapped and redrafted. New people brought new ideas to the table and our series began to get a style of its own. Although still at this early stage the cartoon style had yet to be decided on. As you can tell from this embarrassing trailer...

http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/384571

I hate that trailer so much. We hated it when we uploaded it. We thought we would disappoint everyone but... most people seemed to like it. Or at least they said they liked it. Anyway, we were keen to make sure that this was temporary and that we would be decided soon on a style that suited our show.

Although that trailer is quite interesting as it shows clips from episodes which no longer exist. Such as...

The Shadow of Skaro

For a long time we wanted Davros in the series (because back then we felt cheated that he hadn't been in The Parting of the Ways. We started on a draft that would feature Davros on an empty Skaro with a new race called the Lekads, which would be revealed to be just new, organic travel machines for the Dalek mutant. This story would be followed up in the second series with a full Dalek story.

However, it never really worked and we tried and tried to fit Davros into the first series. Our redraft was Exterminate which was set on a prison ship delivering an elderly Davros to his execution and the Doctor would rescue him, only for him to die later on in the episode. Davros was then going to be converted into a Dalek (unbeknown to the Doctor) and come back in the second series as the Emperor. We dropped it. We wanted to have less episodes with classic series villains and felt that although a Davros on his own story would be nice, we felt like bringing the Daleks back first. But don't fear... both will be returning in the second series (when/if that gets made!).

Drip

This episode had some great little concepts. It was a murder-mystery set in the future where due to space tanker leakage over Earth carrying large supplies of a certain drug, the entire population were peaceful, friendly and altogether docile. It's almost Douglas Adams-like in its setting.

Then there was the way people were found dead. As they died they'd turn black and white and loose all colour which is something just begging to be done in Doctor Who but would also look great in animation.

Unfortunately, we just never thought it worked in our show. The script never really got finished and the conclusion was never that satisfying... so... oh well. Elements of this story will return in Series 2.

Opus

Another episode with great ideas which didn't really fit as a whole. It was originally going to be the companion's first trip into space. Set on the planet Opus, the most invaded planet in the universe (second being Earth), it concerned the Doctor trying to convince the companion to help him stop an invasion by humans.

While we have got rid of almost everything about the story, possibly to return next series (although the lovable Opusians... turtles which share a shell with their mate make a cameo!) the series does feature an episode on an alien planet being 'invaded' by humans. It's not quite like it sounds but we wanted to make the humans the evil aliens in one episode.

Untitled Egyptian Episode

While there is an episode in our series set in Egypt, certain aspects have changed greatly. In the original draft, alien forces were summoning an army of the undead in Ancient Egypt in order to overthrow the Pharaoh.

Our episode now is called No Rest for the Wicked and is set in Victorian Cairo and concerns the Doctor and Emily meeting famous Egyptologist Howard Carter as he uncovers an alien tomb and Emily takes a trip to the Egyptian afterlife.

However, later on in the series we have an episode called The Flight of the Geheim in which alien forces summon an army of the undead in Medieval England and try to overthrow the King. So... comes and goes really.

So while those episodes might no longer be with us for the time being, just be happy that you still have 32 awesome episodes heading your way!

Part Three of our little history... coming soon!

A Brief History of Doctor Who Regenerated (PART ONE)

So where did it all get started? Well it is a very long and very boring story... so I have decided that we shall do this in parts.

CHAPTER ONE ~ The Gathering of Talent

Alright so basically, Barney and me were friends that both wanted to do some animating. We had both been playing around with flash for some time and wanted to do something really ambitious. Something we both love is Doctor Who so doing some sort of Doctor Who film was our goal.

However we could never settle on one plot. So instead we mapped out a whole series of episodes. Now even to someone well versed in Flash Animation this would be quite an undertaking, let alone two novices. But we still felt like doing something big. So we posted our ideas for the series on the Doctor Who Forum (God rest its soul) and this temporary idea.

We asked just casually if anyone would be interested in helping to write some of the episodes and... my... word... We got a massive influx of PMs and replies and emails begging to write for the show. We were a little blow away by it all so we quickly got a first draft of a first episode up and we started getting drafts of episodes from other people within the first week.

It should be noted that at this time the series was very very different. It was in no way a reboot and everything was a whole lot simpler. Perhaps that was a good thing... perhaps it is better now.

Anway... to be continued...

Evening.

Hello faithful viewer! That's me getting into the show-runner spirit. Welcome to the official developer's blog for DOCTOR WHO REGENERATED, the brand new and long awaited animated series based on Doctor Who.

We started this blog because although show is miles and miles away from being completed, we wanted to have a way of keeping in touch with our fans very easily. Because over the next few months we'll actually be animating the show and we don't want people think that it's died just because we're not posting. With this project, no news is good news.

We're gonna get started in a sec but this is just a small hello and goodbye to show that the project is still well and truly being developed.
